Here in Leicester we received an invitation from Mothers' Union in northern Tanzania to send a group of members to visit them and see their work. In September 2002, twelve local members spent two and a half weeks visiting Mothers' Union groups and projects in the towns of Arusha and Moshi and the surrounding regions.

We saw beautiful scenery and wildlife and received a warm welcome in homes, churches and villages. We visited several nursery school projects which, thanks to the generosity of Mothers' Union groups, churches and individuals in Leicestershire, were able to be completed.

We found that we shared much more in common with Tanzanian members than we ever imagined and experienced Mothers' Union uniting Christian women worldwide.

It is not really any easier to be a Christian in Tanzania than it is here. Western influences are strong, especially in the towns and nearby villages. Work and family take up a lot of time; if women are not in formal employment they will be trying to earn money to keep their families through small enterprise.
